Baltimore, Maryland...

South Baltimore's
Locust Point

The South Baltimore Peninsula encompasses all of Locust Point, which is said to be everything that lies to the east of Lawrence Street and is bounded on the north, east and south by waters of the Patapsco River. The old grain elevator is now the upscale Silo Point Condominium project, where every unit has a water view. The old P&G plant is now home to the world headquarters of the Under Armour Company, which will soon be moving, or expanding, to Port Covington.

The "march of the brass lamps" has moved into what was, historically, a close-knit community of predominantly Irish-American, Polish-American and Italian-American families. After all, Locust Point's Whetstone Point was the second largest, second only to Ellis Island, port of entry for immigration back in the day when only steamships crossed the Atlantic.

Some of the original industry included Proctor & Gamble's soap plant, the enormous silos of the Indiana Grain Elevator, and a Domino Sugar Refinery - along with the docks of myriad shipping companies. The grounds of the old Chesapeake Paperboard company, another smokestack industry, has given way to the commercial, residential and retail complex of McHenry Row.

There is a bit too much "change" to list on one page, but Locust point is once again sought-after as a place to call home. We saw an article mentioning that residents gathered at whatever "local pub has earned their fierce loyalty." We suppose much of that loyalty is still true. Hence, some of those (remaining) local pubs are listed below...

GET TO THE POINT: Locust Point, that is. Here are a few of the Baltimore Bars and/or Restaurants within the Locust Point community - on your way to Fort McHenry.
